Topaz ReMask can help you extract elements from photographs by creating masks. This allows you to change the background, for example, to replace a cloudy sky by a sunnier one. The application is quite easy to use, much more if you let the Startup Guide teach you a few things. However, if you have any further doubt, you can consult the User Guide and the tutorials available online.
You’ll soon realize that you can get near perfect results in only nine steps. You should start by selecting the borders of the desired object or person using the brush tool. Then, you can use the green fill tool to mark the whole area you want to keep. Next, you can select which areas to cut with the red fill tool. Once you’ve done this, you’re ready to press the Compute Mask button. It’s also possible to refine the mask with transparency, solid color or a background from another picture. If you want to, you can split the screen and have up to four different previews. By comparing them it’s easier to notice imperfections and make the necessary retouching. Luckily, there’s the Magic Brush tool, which allows making more accurate selections. At this point, the background may not look exactly as you want it, so you can make size and position adjustments. Finally, you’re ready to export the results. Unfortunately, the tool allows exporting only to JPG, TIFF and PNG.
All in all, Topaz ReMask has the main advantage of producing great results in practically no time. By the way, I have to say that it’s surprisingly accurate in getting clean edges of even very fine elements, such as hair, grass and foliage. At the same time, it’s very easy to use, regardless of your expertise. Moreover, there’s also its affordable price. Its main limitation is, of course, that it has a very specific purpose. However, you’ll probably be glad to hear that this tool is also available as a plugin compatible with Photoshop and Lightroom.
